Lists from Nande

These are our running list of places around Chicago. Some are personal favorites and some are spots we've been meaning to check out. They aren't meant to be definitive ranks or exhaustive by any means. If something looks interesting, save it to your personal list.

01
Coda di Volpe
Lake View
One of the only VPN-certified Neapolitan pizzas in the city, cooked in a wood-fired Stefano Ferrara oven imported from Naples. The result is a blistered, chewy crust with a soft center that's genuinely different from everything else in the neighborhood. Housemade pastas round out the menu.

Southport Corridor is one of the most family-dense neighborhoods in the city and this place is intentionally built for it. The food is legitimately high-end, the space is beautiful, and the room just happens to be full of parents who figured that out.

02
Peru Criollo
Portage Park
Located near six corners, the chef is an 80-year-old woman named Violeta who moved from Lima to Chicago in 1980 and has been cooking Peruvian food ever since.

The lomo saltado -- a grilled flank steak with rustic cut potatoes, onions and tomatoes on a bed of garlic white rice is what we constantly come back for.

Despite the white table cloths and candlelit centerpiece, it's a family-run place catering to families too. The kids menu is basically kid-sized portions of the regular menu.

03
The Warbler
Lincoln Square
This place is in the middle of Lincoln Square where the stroller to people ratio is off the charts. Their menu is elevated midwestern comfort food with a bit of Asian influence. Think Korean chicken wings with tamarind glaze, mushroom flatbread, handmade pastas, and roasted vegetables

The big draw for parents is this amazing Weekday Supper Club special from 4:30 to 6pm. It's $32 a head for five dishes and kids under 9 eat free. The culinary team will portion the dishes based on the number of guests to ensure that all get enough to eat.
The Warbler The Warbler The Warbler The Warbler The Warbler
04
Mott St
Pulaski Park
The food here is inspired by Asian night markets and Chef Edward Kim's Korean-American upbringing, and the menu reads like it. Think braised short ribs and oyster congee or a half-pound burger with hoisin aoli and pickled jalapenos.

They have a special kids menu that's more than just chicken tenders and fries. Udon butter noodles is a kid-favorite, the kimchi-pimento grilled cheese is good for more adventurous palettes, and they have all the coloring sheets you need.
Mott St Mott St Mott St Mott St Mott St
05
Community Tavern
Portage Park
Joey Beato trained at Momofuku before coming back to open this in his neighborhood. It's a modern American restaurant with a bit of Asian influence. In a similar culinary zone as Mott St, actually.

For the adults, they got things like hangar steak bulgogi and bar harbor mussels.

For kids (12 and under), the big selling point is that they eat free Tuesday - Thursday and Sunday.

Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio
West Loop
Sarah Grueneberg won a James Beard Award running this kitchen and the pasta is the reason to come. Made in-house daily, the cacio e pepe and the tortellini en brodo is the kind of dish you go out of your way for. Family style.

The special kids' menu has housemade pasta which means your kid is eating well too.

Never been where it hasn't been packed so a little planning ahead is a good idea.

Galit
Sheffield & DePaul
Zachary Engel trained at Shaya before opening this and won the James Beard for Best New Restaurant.

Meditteranean menu with things like mezze plates, char-grilled kebabs, whole roasted cauliflower, lamb chops.

The kids' menu has warm pita with hummus and za'atar, roasted chicken with rice, a small mezze plate. It's stuff that actually introduces kids to real food without being scary about it.

Lillstreet Art Center
Ravenswood
One of the oldest and most legit art centers in Chicago — started as a ceramics studio in a horse barn in 1975 and now occupies a 40,000 square foot former gear factory on Ravenswood.

The adult side of the building is a working art studio. The Kidstreet department for ages 1–16 pulls from the same resources: ceramics, metalsmithing, printmaking, drawing, sewing, digital art. Five-week sessions run after school and weekends, but they also do two-hour family workshops on weekends if you're not ready to commit. The clay classes for little ones start at age 3

First Ascent Uptown
Uptown
Chicago's home-grown climbing gym with five locations across the city.

They have structured programs, family sessions, and also kid drop-offs (6 - 13 years) where you can drop off for 1 - 2 hours for instructor led climbs. Cost is $30/hour.

Schoolhouse Kitchen + Studio Wicker Park
West Town
A cooking school specifically for kids that starts at age two. They have 3 locations (Wicker Park, Portage Park, and Oak Park).

At each, you'll find a mix of cooking classes you can take as a family. It's not a craft project dressed up as food, but real meals like chilaquiles, chana masala, apple galette, and homemade pasta. Classes are usually 1.5 - 2 hours long.

04
Hyde Park Art Center
East Hyde Park
This is a real contemporary art center that runs youth programming alongside its adult exhibitions and artist residencies.

While they don't have a regular cadence of workshops, they do have longer-term classes for kids starting as young as 4. They also periodically have open houses with free workshops and family art activities.

MADE Chicago
Logan Square
A ceramics and woodworking studio on Milwaukee Avenue that opened in 2024. The name stands for Material Art and Design Education — the mission is to make serious craft education accessible to all levels, not just adults.

They have family workshops on the weekends where the whole family can work on a project. They usually last around 2 hours.
